In a shocking turn of events, some soldiers have been accused of invading Ashaiman, a suburb of Accra in the Greater Accra region, and brutalizing residents in the area over the death of one of their colleagues. Reports have it that the soldiers, numbering about 20 and heavily armed, stormed the area on Tuesday, March 7, and started attacking residents, preventing them from even stepping out of their homes.
The incident occurred after a 22-year-old soldier with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) band in Sunyani in the Bono Region was reportedly stabbed to death by unknown attackers on Saturday dawn. The soldier was said to be returning from his girlfriend’s house in Taifa and heading towards his residence at Zongo-Laka in Ashaiman when the unfortunate incident occurred. Although he was carrying a laptop and other electronic gadgets, the attackers made away with only his iPhone.
In a bid to avenge the death of their colleague, the soldiers reportedly invaded Ashaiman and arrested 72 residents for questioning. Reports have it that the number of residents arrested is likely to exceed 72. However, it is unclear which barracks the residents have been sent to.
Eyewitnesses who spoke to Citi News on Tuesday revealed that the soldiers used their boots and hands to attack anyone they saw on the street. They also prevented everyone from stepping out of their homes, leaving many residents stranded. The eyewitnesses further revealed that the soldiers knocked on the doors of the residents and attacked anyone who stepped out. Even women dressed in a certain way became suspects to the soldiers.
The invasion of the soldiers has caused fear and panic among the residents of Ashaiman. Many are scared to go out, as the soldiers are still on the streets. Some residents have called on the government to intervene and put an end to the military brutality in the area.
